Measuring What Companies Actually Do for Society: Inside CMI's Framework for the Champions of CSR
India/Global — December, 2025: CSR reports are easy to write. Proving that the spending behind them translates into real community impact is a different challenge entirely and it's the one Coherent Market Insights (CMI) took on as Research Partner for the ET Now Champions of CSR Conclave 2025,a national platform recognizing organizations for measurable social impact, governance excellence, and responsible business practices.
At the conclave, Mohit Shrivastava, AVP – Research & Consulting at CMI, presented the methodology built to identify India's "Champions of CSR," walking through the evaluation framework, data validation approach, and scoring parameters designed to keep the process neutral, transparent, and representative across sectors. He also discussed the strategic deployment of CSR activity, long-term community development, and governance-led responsibility with corporate leaders, policymakers, sustainability heads, foundations, and CSR practitioners in attendance — conversations that carry added weight as businesses increasingly try to align CSR with their broader ESG commitments.
Starting with Hard Eligibility Rules
CMI's framework didn't begin with reputation or visibility. It began with four concrete eligibility criteria: at least three years of operational presence in India (as of March 2025), a consistent CSR funding commitment, a dedicated CSR or sustainability function, and adherence to national CSR regulations and recognized guidelines. Organizations were then sourced across IT, FMCG, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, energy, automotive, manufacturing, financial services, and consumer goods, ensuring the final list reflected both legacy industries and innovation-driven sectors rather than skewing toward one type of company.
